Introduction

Origin of Salba®
Rooted in the past and rediscovered for the future, Salba® is the culmination of almost 15 years of traditional plant breeding solely using Salvia hispanica L. The first experimental plots for Salba® were started in 1991 in Argentina by Adolfo and Alfredo Mealla.

By painstakingly sorting out the few desirable white grains from the mostly black grains, and then replanting them, they were able not only to produce a primarily white crop, but amazingly the overall consistent nutrient density was greatly enhanced. Adolfo decided that this new variety should be honored with its own name. Thus Salba® was born. The word ‘Salba’ is a combination of the botanical name Salvia hispanica L., and the Latin word for white, Alba.

The Mealla brothers would now embark on their long, concentrated effort of plant research that would span nearly 15 years. By 1994, they had successfully introduced Salba® in Colombia and in 1997, planted further experimental crops in Bolivia and Peru. Today, Salba® is grown under strictly controlled conditions in Peru because of its ideal climate and pristine environment. Peru is home to the spectacular Amazon Basin and one of the last bastions of unspoiled countries in the world.

What is Salba®
Salba® is the only evidence-based, registered variety of ancient plant species belonging to the mint family known as Salvia Hispanica. Its botanical name is Salvia hispanica L.

The brilliant Aztecs used these powerful seeds to sustain them on long and arduous hunting and trading expeditions and in battle. Runners would relay messages throughout their immense kingdom, relying on the seeds for their only source of nourishment.

Salba® is a cultivar of Salvia hispanica L. that has been used in the diets of humans for hundreds of years. The remarkably advanced Aztec nation cultivated Salvia hispanica L., which they called chia, as one of their nutritional foundations. They referred to this as “Running Food” because it provided extraordinary energy and power. Chia was to the Aztecs what Ginseng is to the Orient: the nutritional secret for restoring vigour.

Agricultural Science
After the creation of the Salba® variety, its potency has been further maximised through:

  • Climate Selection
The planet’s most optimal place to harvest; the desert coast of Peru.

  • Non-GMO Selective Breeding
Each batch is rigorously tested to pinpoint the most nutritionally consistent seeds. These seeds are then utilised in the maker’s distinctive breeding process, classifying Salba® as an heirloom crop.

  • Crop Lifecycle
Salba® seeds are not harvested early, only at their most nutritious apex.

A Good Source of Nutrients from Nature

Salba® provides essential nutrients, including essential fatty acids (omega-3) and an abundance of both soluble and insoluble dietary fibre. In addition, it is an exceptionally good source of vitamins, minerals and high-quality vegetable protein.

In 2004 Salba® was introduced to North America, in Canada, where it is currently receiving nationwide acclaim. Today, Salba® is an excellent complement to everyone’s diet, including vegetarians, vegans, and people who are allergic to gluten, as it is gluten free.

Salba® is good for Everyone

  • Working Professionals
As multitasking has become a way of life in Western society, fewer adults put time aside for meals throughout the day. Many people turn to fast food restaurants for ‘on-the-go’ meals as a habit of convenience. Because Salba® has an ideal nutrient density, convenient formulations, and can be integrated into any meal, it is the perfect cornerstone of a nutritious diet. With Salba®, even poor diet choices can be improved.

  • The Middle-Aged & Elderly
Salba®’s high levels of antioxidants, protein, essential amino acids, vitamins, minerals, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, iron, potassium, and dietary fibre all contribute to better health and well-being.

  • Children & Adolescents
Major recent nutritional surveys in North America demonstrate severe deficiencies of major nutrients in diets of adolescents. Salba®’s neutral flavour blends into any food, making it the perfect delivery system for the valuable nutrients many children lack.

  • Athletes
With an abundance of iron, essential amino acids, calcium, phosphorus, electrolytes, and w-3 polyunsaturates, Salba® is ideally suited to aid in sports endurance, athletic performance, and physical recovery.

  • The Overweight Population
In an era of fad diets and fast-food convenience, Salba® provides a natural and convenient delivery system for many essential nutrients. Salba® is nature’s whole food source of fibre, with seeds that absorb up to 12 times their weight in water. As the Salba® seeds expand in the stomach, they help to suppress hunger for longer periods of time.

  • Women
Salba® is the perfect supplement for the female diet, packed with calcium, phosphorus, iron, w-3 polyunsaturates, folate, magnesium, and antioxidants – all the essential nutrients a woman needs in a convenient whole food delivery system.

  • People with Digestive Disorders
Due to its extremely high concentration of dietary fibre, Salba® supports colon health and digestive abnormalities and also helps facilitate the digestive process.

Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs)
Not all fats are bad. Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) are necessary fats that the human body cannot manufacture and must obtain from the food we eat. These are the ‘good fats’ that raise your High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) or ‘good cholesterol’ and support a number of vital body functions, such as the cardiovascular, reproductive and nervous systems. EFAs are needed to manufacture and repair cell membranes and for the production of prostaglandins, which regulate body functions, such as heart rate and blood pressure. EFAs also play a role in immune efficiency by regulating inflammation and encouraging the body to fight infection.

Omega-3s vs 6s
There are two families of EFAs – Omega-3s (Alpha-Linolenic Acid) and Omega-6s (Linoleic Acid). Fats from each of these families are essential, as the body can convert omega-3s to create more omega-3s, for example, but cannot create omega-3s from omega-6s or saturated fats. The average person’s diet generally provides enough omega-6s for the body’s needs. However, modern-day diets, eating habits and processed food rarely supply us with the amount of omega-3s that our body needs.

Flax Seed & Chia Seed Comparison

Salba® has More Nutrients than Common Chia
The Salba® agronomic teams have invested the past 15 years researching Salba® (Salvia hispanica L.). During those 15 years, Salba® seeds have been grown utilising the perfect location, the perfect soil composition, the perfect climate, the perfect irrigation methods, the perfect crop lifecycle, the perfect amount of sunlight, and the perfect art of Non-GMO selective breeding.

Salba® seeds are hand-picked, and only the seeds with the highest nutrient density are harvested and replanted. The result? Higher quantities of the quality nutrients you need and guaranteed consistency from crop to crop. When you choose Salba®, you choose quality of life.

Salba® is More Nutritious and Easier to Use than Flax Seed
Flax seed has been a popular supplement for years due to its high fibre and omega-3 fatty acids content. Based on recent research and USDA verified information, Salba® has 25-30% more fibre than flax seed and it maintains the ideal 3.5-to-1 omega-3s to omega-6s ratios.

Salba® seeds also have other natural advantages over flax seeds. Unlike flax, Salba® is 100% bioavailable when consumed as a whole seed. Flax seeds have a thick husk that cannot be digested and must be ground to release the benefits of omega-3s. And while flax seed has a powerful, nutty flavour and an oily consistency, Salba® seeds have a neutral flavour and a smooth texture that makes them the perfect functional ingredient in any recipe.
